Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. When she was a young girl, Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away and caused her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as an attendant or cleaner in order for them to survive. Ruth was raised in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she enrolled in high school. The school she was attending just two years later in order to pursue acting as a profession. Her journey was not without obstacles. the path she chose to pursue. Then, in New York she was hired to take photos for a publication about crime however, no theatre opportunities were offered. Then, after a time as a club hat girl, she decided to return to her home in Massachusetts and leave her job. She made the ends meet by working as an usherette in the morning, while in the evening, she performed with the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She took classes in drama at the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
